Spring update
Hey hey,
I just thought I’d put a note up here that fills you in on all the latest news.
New recordings
Tracking has been wrapped up for a new solo recording, as yet untitled. I will be mixing in the coming weeks with Jeremy Gara, who also mixed Lies on the Prize and Sentimental Gentleman. All I can say for now is that I’m very proud, and that it goes in both new and familiar directions all at once. An amazing cast of contributors helped to bring it to life: Jeremy Gara (Arcade Fire), Sebastian Chow (Caroline Keating, formerly of Islands), Colin Stetson (known for his own incredible records, and for his work with Bon Iver among a zillion others), Mathieu Charbonneau (Luyas, formerly of Torngat), Nathan Gage (Eflfin Saddle, Shapes & Sizes), and Laurel Sprengelmeyer (Little Scream). It’s going to be a tweaker of quiet weirdness and bent-up beauty. I’ll keep you posted as it comes together.
A Sentimental Companion: demos and sketches from Sentimental Gentleman
Also, coming very soon (June 5, to be exact) is a special treat: A Sentimental Companion, a 5 song download comprised of sketches and demos leading up to the recording of Sentimental Gentleman, will be available at all the usual digital outlets. It sheds a bit of light on the process of making that record by presenting the songs in their most bare form. I hope you enjoy. Look for it soon.
Shows!
June will see some shows too. I’ll be playing with some of my favourite musicians. I share two shows with the amazing Devon Sproule in Ottawa and Montreal. Her record I Love You, Go Easy has been a rich discovery for me in these last couple of months. Check it out.
After that, I’ll head to the prairies for a string of dates beginning in Sakatoon with MosoFest and ending in Calgary at Sled Island. Many of these shows will with my old friend Bry Webb, whose album Provider is a thing of beauty, and we’ll be joined by the lovely prairie heartbreaker Zachary Lucky.
I can’t say how happy I am to finally be hitting the flatlands – it’s been too long.
That’s enough for now – seems like a lot actually. I’ll try not to keep you all in such suspense next time.
xo
Michael.
